The five things you must know about Irpinia
Tasting a wine is linked to emotional mechanisms and drinking with the awareness of knowing a territory can totally change this experience…
1. Irpinia is the province of Campania with the highest concentration of vineyards set among wooded mountains, green hills, rivers with quiet courses, archaeological sites, medieval and millenary abbeys in memory of a past, rich in history.
2. Even though it is located in central-southern Italy, it has similar conditions to French Alsace (sunny summers, harsh winters, good ventilation) known for late harvests and strong temperature variations between day and night that contribute to the aromatic components of the grapes.
3. The main native Irpinia grapes are of Greek origin and the contribution of the Greeks will be fundamental for the success of Irpinia wines which, was first recorded in Roman times. In fact, the predisposition of the Irpinia soil to the cultivation of vines was already known at the time of the Romans and it has been preserved up to the present day.
4. Irpinia counts a very high presence of old vines due to the fact that local producers and farmers during the 1970s made careful choices to preserve the heritage of native grapes – in spite of the cultivation of national vines that the agricultural inspectorates of the time suggested because of a certain guarantee in terms of the quantity.
5. In recent years, the number of new producers who are becoming aware of the potential of the territory has been constantly growing, while also working in compliance with the environmental sustainability and offering authentic local wines.
